Our Story
It started with a shoelace.
Mayan (Yan) Ma — a Chinese immigrant civil engineer — tied her purse to her leg with a shoelace on a cross-country flight. It was uncomfortable, impractical, and unforgettable. She couldn't stop thinking about a better way.
Ukoala — Built for the bodyWatching koalas changed everything.
Yan watched koalas cling effortlessly to trees and designed a base shape that curves along the body, making the bag's weight disappear. Then she engineered a strap system that keeps a bag secure against the body without shoulder strain, bulk, or compromise.
That's where the name comes from. And that's why the bag can be worn eight different ways — because the strap system was engineered around the body, not around a sewing pattern.
Handcrafted with intention.
Every Ukoala bag is cut and sewn from 1060D nylon that shrugs off abrasion, waxed canvas that ages with you, and reinforced stitching at every stress point. Handcrafted, not assembled.
Purpose-Built
Every compartment, strap, and closure is designed for a specific function — not decoration.
