The best bag for comic con is small, worn on your body, and hands-free. It holds a phone, wallet, badge, water, snacks, a charger, and a few small purchases, stays closed in a crowd, and never needs a hand while you shop, take photos, or hold a prop. A hip bag (also called a belt bag or fanny pack) or a drop leg bag does that for most people. If you plan to buy a stack of comics, add a padded collector backpack such as the Hex Comic Book Collector Backpack; for pins and plush, an ita bag.

Updated October 18, 2026, by the Ukoala team. We make hands-free bags, so we have a stake in this answer. The table below also names other brands and says when a backpack is the better choice.

Ukoala has made hands-free bags since 2012, and we sell them from convention booths across the U.S. This fall alone that means Animate! Philadelphia, UwU Con, New York Comic Con, GalaxyCon St. Louis, and Anime Weekend Atlanta. This guide is what we see work on long show days.

Quick picks: the best comic con bags

  • Best overall for walking the floor: a hip or drop leg bag, such as the Ukoala What If ($109 to $139) or the Ukoala Phoenix ($129 to $169).
  • Best for comic hauls: a padded collector backpack, such as the Hex Comic Book Collector Backpack.
  • Best on a budget: the daypack you already own, such as a JanSport or an Osprey Daylite, with your phone and wallet in a small bag on your body.
  • Best for cosplay: a small hip or leg bag that matches the costume, such as the Ukoala Double Trouble or the Zombie with swappable covers.
  • Best for pins and plush: an ita bag, with your valuables kept in a separate body-worn bag.

Best bag for comic con by con style

No single bag wins every con. Match the bag to how you will spend the day.

Your con day Best bag type Examples Why it works Trade-off
Walking the floor, artist alley, photos Hip or drop leg bag Ukoala What If, Ukoala Phoenix Both hands stay free, the weight sits on your hips and thigh instead of one shoulder, and it clears bag check fast. Holds essentials and small buys, not a stack of comics or large prints.
Comic hauls and signed books Collector backpack Hex Comic Book Collector Backpack, Knack Pack Made to carry comics and bigger purchases without bending them. Heavy by afternoon, comes off for every purchase, and bumps people in tight aisles.
Day pass, few purchases, cold panel rooms Everyday daypack JanSport SuperBreak, Osprey Daylite Light, inexpensive, and has room for a sweater. Hard to reach in a line, and an easy target behind you in a crowd.
Cosplay Small hip or leg bag that matches the costume Ukoala Double Trouble, Ukoala Zombie (swappable covers) Does not crush a cape or fight with wings, and a leg bag suits many character looks. The smallest bags may not fit a full repair kit.
Showing off pins and plush Ita bag Many small makers Displays your collection. The display window adds bulk. Keep your phone and wallet in a body-worn bag.
Posters and prints Poster tube or flat folder, plus any bag above Any lightweight tube Keeps prints from creasing. One more thing to hold, so keep the main bag hands-free.

What should I bring to comic con?

Pack for eight to ten hours on your feet, with long lines and little time to sit.

  • Badge and ID. Keep the badge where you can show it fast at every entrance.
  • Phone and a small power bank with a cable. Photos, maps, and the show app drain a battery by mid-afternoon.
  • Cards and some cash. Many artist alley tables take cards, but cash still speeds up small purchases.
  • A refillable water bottle and two snacks. Food lines are long at lunch.
  • Hand sanitizer, lip balm, and any medication you need. "Con crud", the cold that goes around after a big show, is real.
  • A small cosplay repair kit if you are in costume: safety pins, double-sided tape, a few bobby pins.
  • A foldable tote or a poster tube for large prints and posters you buy.

What are the bag rules at comic con?

Most big cons do not limit bag size, but they search bags at the door, check props, and limit rolling bags and carts. We read the official policy pages of 8 shows on October 18, 2026. None of them publishes a bag size limit, and none requires a clear bag. What they share: bag searches at the door, a prop check, and limits on rolling bags and carts. Rules change every year, so check your show's page before you go.

What should I leave at home?

  • Real weapons, and props that have not been checked. All 8 shows above run a prop check or a peace-bond rule. Plan a few extra minutes at the door if you carry a prop.
  • Large rolling bags and carts where your show bans them. They are hard to move through aisles even where they are allowed.
  • Anything you cannot carry for ten hours. If it needs a hand all day, it stays in the hotel or the car.

What to look for in a comic con bag

It keeps both hands free

You will hold a coffee, a sketch, a prop, or a phone for photos most of the day. A bag that sits on your hip or thigh stays out of the way. A tote or a shoulder bag keeps sliding and needs a hand.

It keeps weight off one shoulder

A heavy shoulder strap is fine for an hour and painful by the afternoon. Weight on the hips and thigh is easier to carry for a full day.

It stays secure in a crowd

Aisles get packed. Look for a pocket that sits against your body for your phone and wallet, and zippers you can feel.

It works with a costume

A backpack hides a cape and fights with wings. A hip or leg bag can match the look, and a bag that converts lets you move it when the costume changes.

It has pockets you can find without looking

Separate pockets for the badge, phone, cards, and snacks mean you pay or show your badge in seconds. One big compartment means digging in a line.

It handles a spilled drink or a rainy outdoor line

Many shows start with a long wait outside. Water-resistant fabric and zippers keep your phone, prints, and badge dry.

It is small enough for any bag check

A compact bag clears screening fast and does not bump into people at crowded tables.

Which Ukoala bag works best for conventions?

Prices as of October 18, 2026.

  • What If ($109 to $139): lightweight nylon, built for conventions, cosplay, and concerts. It wears four ways: hip, sling, backpack, and front carry. Choose the size by your height: Compact for 4'9" to 5'2", Standard for 5'3" to 5'9".
  • Phoenix ($129 to $169): nine pockets in water-resistant nylon for a full day. It wears all eight ways, including drop leg and hip. In the Standard size, the main compartment and front pocket hold about 2.4 liters together (6 x 8 x 1.75 and 6 x 7 x 1.5 inches, from our size chart), and a flat 6.25 x 8.5 inch back pocket sits against your body for a phone and cards.
  • Double Trouble ($169): a dual-pouch bag in waxed canvas and nylon, water-resistant, with one pouch for what you reach for and one for what you keep safe. It wears four ways: hip, sling, backpack, and cross body.

Frequently asked questions

Is a backpack or a hip bag better for comic con?

For walking the floor, a hip or drop leg bag. Both hands stay free, the weight sits on your hips, and you do not hit the person behind you in a line. A backpack is better only when you plan to carry many comics or large purchases. Many regulars use both: a hip bag for the phone, wallet, and badge, and a backpack or tote for purchases.

What is the best bag for comic con?

A small, body-worn, hands-free bag such as a hip or drop leg bag, for walking the floor. Add a padded collector backpack only if you plan to buy many comics.

Are backpacks allowed at comic con?

Yes, at most shows. None of the 8 shows we checked bans ordinary backpacks, but New York Comic Con bans wheeled backpacks on the Show Floor, and most shows search bags at the door. Rules change by show and by year, so read the official policy for your event before you go.

Are rolling bags allowed at comic con?

Often not on the show floor. San Diego Comic-Con bans rolling luggage and handcarts in the Exhibit Hall, and New York Comic Con bans them, and wheeled backpacks, on the Show Floor. A body-worn bag avoids the question.

What size bag should I bring to a convention?

None of the 8 major cons we checked sets a bag size limit, so choose by comfort: as small as your essentials allow. A bag that holds a phone, wallet, badge, water bottle, and snacks is enough for most people. Carry a foldable tote or a poster tube for prints.

Is a fanny pack or a drop leg bag better for comic con?

Both keep your hands free. A drop leg bag holds more and stays put when you bend over tables. A hip bag is quicker to reach. A convertible bag lets you switch during the day.

How do I keep my phone safe in a crowded convention?

Keep it in a zipped pocket that sits against your body, not in an open outer pocket or a back pocket of your jeans.
